Clinical Trials Infrastructure Fund

The Clinical Trials Infrastructure Fund (CTIF) was established to provide funding to Ontario hospitals and cancer treatment centres involved in clinical trials. The goal is to achieve a sustainable increase in patient enrolment.

In 2004, CTIF began to award funds to hospitals and cancer centres. The 28 participating institutions hired additional clinical trials nurses, data managers, research pharmacists and other personnel.

By 2007, the number of clinical trials personnel in participating hospitals had doubled; more than 150 new full-time staff members were hired.

Patient recruitment into cancer clinical trials in participating centres was doubled within three years of funding. When funding began, only about five per cent of Ontarians requiring cancer treatment enrolled in clinical trials. Today, about 12 per cent of cancer patients enrol in clinical trials. CTIF has an advisory council, Clinical Trials Advisory Council (CTAC) which is instrumental in guiding future initiatives of the program.
