Panel Members
All proposals submitted to the Cancer Research Fund will be reviewed by one of two Standing Panels – the Translational Research Panel or the Clinical and Companion Trials Panel.
The Translational Research Panel is composed of members with a broad range of expertise in the relevant scientific disciplines, as well as members with backgrounds in academic research. The Panel will use external reviewers when required.
The Clinical and Companion Trials Panel is composed of members with backgrounds in academia, industry, as well as investigators from major existing clinical trials groups.
Members for the two panels are chosen based on:
- Research excellence: either as a basic scientist or clinical investigator;
- Quality as a referee;
- Need to cover a full range of research areas and relevant methodologies;
- Need for panel membership turnover. Panel members will not serve more than three consecutive panel rounds; The Chairs/Co-chairs and Scientific Officer may serve additional rounds;
- Need for representation by both genders;
- Chairs/Co-chairs will have recognition within the community and leadership qualities.
Lay Members:
OICR believes that Participation of lay members on grant panels is advantageous because:
- It provides increased transparency for the panel review process;
- It promotes better communication between the scientific and non-scientific community;
- It provides a better appreciation of consumer perspective of the process
At OICR:
- Each panel has two lay members;
- Panel Chairs/Co-chairs are encouraged to involve the lay members in an active fashion, as appropriate;
- Lay members agree to participate to the level they feel comfortable, and continue to act as “consultants” to OICR in helping to determine what the appropriate role for lay participants should be in the future;
- Lay members are encouraged to ask questions or make comments on any aspect of the grants being reviewed, without partaking in the formal scoring and rating exercise;
- All lay members of the panel must be from Ontario as OICR, as an initiative established by the Government of Ontario, is accountable to the Ontario public;
- All lay members should represent cancer organization. In an effort to establish transparency within the grant panel process, OICR hopes that the experience obtained in acting as an OICR lay panel reviewer can be related to a broader audience.
